Well some people, including Michael Moore, have concluded that after such an idiotic war, there will be a very large decrease in voluntary military enlistments. If this situation in iraq drags on, as it surely will, more recruits will be needed, but not available.

Obviously they're not gonna come out and say "we're bringing back the draft" because it would doom Bush in the next election. (As if he's not doomed enough.)

Well I agree with a lot of things Michael Moore says, but that's a little off. The US armed forces currently consists of a lot of younger people who have a lot of time left on their service. Quitting the military before you reach retirement is an incredibly idiotic idea, because military severance packages are very very nice.

I have no doubt less people will be signing up now to needlessly die for their country over idiotic non causes. However, a military shortage for them is a very long ways off. Maybe in a decade or so, assuming they're still engaged in some sort of heavy military action.

Like, for comparison, the US has enough soldiers in reserve to completely swap out everyone stationed in the middle east, and then some, which is what they're doing. That's not something they need to do, it's something they can do, since it helps troop morale and keeps the soldiers fresh. Unless they suddenly get engaged on multiple fronts, they have more than enough boys in reserve.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Bush was back in office for another term. That's not to say he'd get reelected, considering he wasn't elected in the first place. Anyone who truly believes the people of the United States have any say in their leadership is a little deluded. Democracy is long dead down there.

As far as I know, regular service time in the military is four years, likely not enough time to completely deal with the situation in Iraq. Very few are going to re-enlist.

Well, you sign up for a certain amount of years (which is usually four). However, even with our years are done....your ass is still theirs...to say the least.

And being in the military isn't that great for the soldiers since they aren't taken are of. Look at all the stories about US soldiers dying because they're not properly taken care of.

Too add, Bush lowered pension for Veterans awhile ago...and even took money away from the education that children of soldiers receive at military bases.

It's not that great at all...sure, they pay for 4 years...but at what price? Your life when you're shipped off? lol

I"m unsure of how many soldiers the US has ready to deploy without the draft. :\
